In the “Creator Tools” series, you’ll find out which tools and skills you definitely need to have as a content creator. Part 2 is about how to create the perfect images for your content and which creator tools you should know about.

Make your life easier by using the right creator tools for your photos, images and graphics. Nowadays, there are a lot of creator tools, websites and programs for image editing and creation, so you don’t need any special knowledge in graphic design or photography anymore to create a professional looking website.

First of all, of course, you need to ask yourself what you’re currently using images for.

  1. Are your photos your own exclusive content? Then you’re already a photography and design pro. You should still check out some of the following tools you can use to market your images.
  2. Do you need a cover page? To make your eBook or PDF even more appealing, you can design a beautiful cover page containing photos and text.
  3. Do you want to enhance your content with graphs? For example, to make an article for your blog even more understandable, you can always add screenshots, explanatory graphics, drawings or even beautiful images.
  4. Do you need visual elements to boost your marketing? To increase your reach and keep your community up to date, you need social media posts and graphic advertising elements.

What should you take into consideration when using images?

Depending on what you want to use the images for, you need to take a number of things into consideration.

For example, if you want to include text in the image, you may need a little more space or a uniform background.

Depending on what the purpose of your images is, you should also consider the format. Instagram posts are square, whereas YouTube videos are produced in landscape format and Stories are in 16:9 portrait format.

Tips and tricks to make your pictures beautiful

There are a few little tips and tricks that can be quickly implemented and also quickly lead to beautiful results.

Do you already know the rule of thirds? This means that your subject should not be in the center of the picture, but you should position the camera so that the subject of the picture is either in the upper or lower third and either on the left or right side of the picture.

Different times of day (sunrise, twilight, etc.) and weather conditions can produce different results.

The best light for taking photos is about two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset. You should try to avoid the midday sun (in summer between about 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.), because the light conditions are not necessarily the best. During these hours, the intensity of light is often very strong and creates a “hard” unflattering effect.

A cloudy day can also be good weather for photos, contrary to what you might expect. If it’s still bright enough, the lighting for portraits on cloudy days, for example, is better than in bright sunshine.

You can also just change your angle and try something new! From above, everything looks a little smaller and from below, everything looks a little bigger.

Before you zoom in too much and possibly cause the image quality to suffer, take a few steps towards your subject.

If you don’t want to take the photos yourself, there are many websites where you can download paid or free images.

Paid and free images for download

If, for example, you’re not necessarily writing a post about yourself or if you want a general landscape or even just abstract art, there are many good online databases where you can easily find something suitable for every topic.

The largest and most popular photo databases are Shutterstock and Adobe Stock. These databases offer images as well as videos and music for sale. The images are royalty-free.

There are also many smaller websites where you can find stock photos for free.

You can download free images on websites such as Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay. These websites have a huge selection of free to use images that are provided by creators worldwide.

By the way: when you download an image, you can thank the creator of the image.

Also, graphic design editor software, such as Canva, Crello and Snappa, offer free images that you can use. However, these websites don’t exclusively provide images, but are more for creating graphics and collages.

To edit your photos or create new images, designs or graphics, it’s best to use photo software. You can use photo software to remove flaws such as red eye and to increase the quality of photos taken in low light conditions.

What are the most important and helpful creator tools for photo editing?

If you haven’t worked with photo programs before, or if you just want to work quickly, it’s not a good idea to buy the entire Adobe Suite right away, you just need tool that is intuitive and does some of the thinking for you.

A free Adobe Photoshop alternative is the open-source software Gimp. With a little intuition and practice, you can use it to get professional results when editing your photos.

Our tip for you: Canva

Canva is a mostly free tool that allows you to easily edit and create images for social media. Canva is a web-based application and is important for content creators because, as an image editing and publishing tool, it offers you a nearly all-in-one solution for social media.

Additionally, Canva offers you various templates for your visual content. The website allows you to use the photos and to edit them.

Best of all, it’s super easy and intuitive! We really love it!

You can directly choose the platform you want to use your content on and Canva automatically selects the right format:

  • 16:9 for videos on YouTube and Fanbase
  • 10:10 and therefore square, an ideal format for your photo post
  • 9:16 for your Instagram story

Get started: edit your own photos, make banners for your podcast or create graphics for your blog.

Other tools for graphic design and editing include Crello and Snappa.

When you’re on the go and you want to change something quickly, you can also easily use a photo editing app. Use your own app on your smartphone or, for example, use the Snapseed app from Google with its many templates or the Adobe Photoshop Express app with many free options.

Just a small note in closing: the point of editing photos is not that you suddenly become a different person and no one can recognize you anymore. Authenticity and reality are the latest trends. For you, that means you can remove the red eyes, but it doesn’t have to be a total makeover.
